GES254 Richmond Water Tunnels
As with most things in London, and probably any big city. Access comes and goes for certain sites. A quick spread of word of mouth, and a few people get in while a place is accessible. Getting into these Water tunnels was a squeeze through a resistant door, that took awhile to get through along with a camera bag. Finally in, a gallery sat above the water pipes dropping down below us. An unknown pipe opens into the mix on the left.
The ladders and platforms dropping beside the mighty pipes.
All down at the bottom, the usual concentric ringed tunnel lay ahead. Although this one looked in pretty good nick compared to others.
The walkway wasn't in such a good state, and quickly disappeared. We ended up walking along the pipes.
Alex Residues further ahead down the tunnel.
The other end of the tunnel, looking up. One large pipe, rather than 4 separate ones. A lovely iron spiral staircase rises to the surface, as apposed to the ladders on the North bank.
It took numerous attempts to try to get a close up of the styling on the staircase, but this was the best I could do. There wasn't much room. This leads to the South bank entrance, near Twickenham.
It wasn't the longest of trips, but it was always good to see more of subterranean London. We then plodded back to the North side, and began to breath in for the squeeze.
Thanks to Residues.
