GES286 - Ko Samui Abandoned hotels, Thailand

I was supposed to be on my honeymoon on the sunny island of Ko Samui, but there's only so many massages you can have, although the wife seemed to need more. So I snuck off to have a wander around some sites I spotted from the road.

The first was just north of Chaweng, a bit of research shows it to formerly be the Cabana Grand Hotel. It consists of 3 apartment like buildings, the first nearest the main road was nearest completion, the other 2 were mainly concrete unfinished shells.

I approached from the rear, as I had no idea if there was a security guard or anything at the front. It was overgrown young woodland. The other apartment is just about visible on the right.

The building on the right had a knackered bar area on the ground floor. Which is odd, as the rest of the building was a concrete shell. I guess the workers were thirsty in the heat.

Further up on the building on the right. Glass sheet panels lay about, and a workman's table. All the tables were hastily built from wood and looked rather rickety.

The building on the left from the first picture, and next to it on the left in this picture, a fully occupied hotel.

Looking down to the unfinished pools.

The front building of the 3, this was much closer to completion.

I climbed the building on the left from the first pic. It was dodgy up this one, as I could be seen from the occupied hotel, The KC Resort, as well as the hotel below. The Cabana Grand is on the left with beautiful views.

The two concrete shells at the back

I decided to walk into the main entrance of the front building, but saw what looked like someone in a beige boilersuit about to walk out, so double backed. The only way i could find in without dropping two storeys, was to jump about a metre or so to an open window. Thankfully the window frame held, and I set about going to the top. The views would have been amazing if the place had opened. You can see the sea on either side of the headland.

The rooftop pool, not looking it's best if I'm honest. Tripadvisor score 0.5

And those views, including Ko Mat Lang out in the bay.

I bumped into two Russians laughing and coming up the stairs, so I figured the security had gone or was never there. This is the hotel reception foyer, and lifts at the back.

As i looked around the entrance to the hotel, two boys were having a bath, in a bath that had been dragged out into the front garden. A guy in his thirties sat on the steps. After seeing a living area in the kitchens, I guessed they were squatting there.

The approach to hotel

Heading towards Thongson Bay on the scooter, I noticed more overgrown villas. Another abandoned resort.

The resort was totally uninteresting, apart from it's interesting offering of villa pools. You could have dark green...

Light green, or...

Rhubarb red for the adventurous.

While out kayaking in Cheong Mon Bay, I noticed an abandoned hotel was actually next to our hotel. It was hidden behind metal panelling. Not being a sun worshipper, i left her too it for quarter of an hour, and found a pre-made hole cut in the fence. Conscious of Thailands healthy venomous snake population, I was nervey of the long grass surrounding the buildings. Here was the beachfront bar for the unfinished resort.

The hotel's restaurants and spa area all unfinished near the beach.

The resorts main central building.

As i moved forward, I could see the building opposite the main central building. And then the security guard sat underneath it. He was overweight and docile looking. I waved and he waved back. I took a few more pictures and left.

A large building, and some of the accommodation villas heading up the right hand side.

The huge ornamental lake that sits awkwardly alongside the beach. The beach being on the other side of the metal fence. I'd hate to be here in peak mosquito season!

There are many other unfinished resorts dotted around the island, and no doubt the mainland. Investing in paradise is a tricky business.
